Grammy-winning producer, composer, and now vocalist, Son Tensei steps into the spotlight with his deeply personal and socially conscious new album, Son Is Different—a project that lives up to its name in every way.
For over 15 years, Son Tensei has been a quiet but powerful force behind the scenes, collaborating with artists across the globe. He made history in 2023 as part of the first-ever Grammy win for Spoken Word Poetry with J. Ivy, credited under his birth name, Christopher Kramer. Now, Son Tensei is using his own voice—literally—to deliver a body of work that challenges, reflects, and uplifts.
Born on the South Side of Chicago to a culturally mixed, working-class immigrant family, Son’s story is anything but typical. At age 19, he became part of a Japanese family in Niigata, Japan, eventually achieving near-native fluency in the language. His life has since become a seamless blend of two worlds—now splitting his time between Japan and the Bay Area, USA—bridging cultures, sounds, and philosophies.

Unlike many modern vocalists, Son Tensei’s jazz baritenor voice is presented with raw authenticity. No auto-tune, no pitch correction—just pure, vintage studio recordings. This is a return to the roots of music, where imperfections are beautiful, and truth rings louder than gloss.
