DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH: Spence Lee – “On God”

In this new entry in our ‘Diamonds In The Rough’ category, we want to introduce you to upcoming artist Spence Lee and his brand new single titled “On God”.

First-generation Vietnamese/Chinese American artist Spence Lee (formerly known as Shotta Spence), hailing from New Jersey, released his newest single “On God” on October 28th via 88rising/Ear Drummers Records. This also marks his first release with 88rising in partnership with Mike WiLL Made-It / Ear Drummers Records.

“The song is a motivational song written through positive affirmations, almost like a prayer. It reflects on my story, which gives me hope in the present and faith in my future. On God means I’m standing on God as my foundation. And every line is true, hence the term “On God,” explains Spence.

The video, directed by Jason Ano, opens with a young Spence playing piano in what feels like a warm childhood home. Flashed between photos and memories of his childhood, Spence is seen praying to his higher power as a way of celebrating his successes in life thus far. The lyrics pack hard emotional depth with lines about staying true to yourself and keeping on your own path, from “The only person I’m in competition with is my reflection” to “I pray for my enemies cause I know jealousy comes from obsession”. We see the rising artist placed in a room lit with lanterns, visually linking his family’s heritage to his career and signing to 88rising– a pioneering global music and media company representing the best of Asian talent.
