In this new entry in our ‘Diamonds In The Rough’ category, we would like to introduce you to upcoming producer SV and his brand new project titled Past Partial featuring vocals from Antonia Marquee.
There’s something special happening in the margins of lo-fi hip hop, where raw emotion meets sonic experimentation—and SV, the seasoned producer and musical alchemist from Boston, has tapped directly into that current with his latest release, Past Partial. A genre-blurring, soul-stirring journey, Past Partial is a mosaic of soundscapes, laced with sultry, emotionally resonant vocals by the incredible Antonia Marquee, and elevated by live instrumentation from JaMichael (flute) and Kevon Scott (sax).
SV has been crafting immersive musical experiences for over 15 years, weaving together boom bap beats, neo-soul warmth, alternative R&B textures, and electronic ambiance. His new project isn’t just an album—it’s a vibe. These are “Song-Trumentals”—tasteful, groove-driven compositions that play between instrumental precision and lyrical minimalism, allowing listeners to float somewhere between memory and imagination.
At its core, Past Partial explores the idea of unfinished moments—”a time/episode/event in your past you didn’t fully complete.” It asks a simple, haunting question: What is your Past Partial? Each track becomes a portal into that space between closure and possibility, where the past hums just beneath the surface of now.
The project opens with “Now You Wish You Would,” where Antonia Marquee’s voice melts into JaMichael’s fluttering flute, setting the tone for what’s to come—an elegant tension between beauty and regret. On “Saving Grace” and “The Answer,” Kevon Scott’s sax brings a smokey, jazz-lounge edge to SV’s hypnotic rhythms, while Marquee’s vocals are both grounding and celestial.
Tracks like “Get Lost” and “Target Atmos” invite listeners deeper into night-drive territory, lush with soft synths and a sense of motion through memory. “Art Seek Rile” stands out as a contemplative centerpiece, and “All That” balances sparse arrangement with emotional clarity—Marquee’s voice again shining through the fog like a lighthouse.
SV’s ability to build worlds out of rhythm and restraint is on full display here. From his early days co-founding Jim’s Pool Room Records to this latest evolution, his music has always been about connection—sonically, emotionally, spiritually. Past Partial doesn’t demand attention; it invites it. It’s not loud, but it lingers. It’s not trying to be trendy, but it’s timeless.
For those who crave music that exists in the liminal spaces—between genres, between thoughts, between moments—Past Partial is your new soundtrack. Lo-fi, alternative hip hop, chill wave, whatever label you want to throw on it—it’s just music. Good music.
So light something. Pour something. Reflect on what once was. And let Past Partial carry you through the places in your soul that you haven’t fully visited in a while.
