DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH: YXL Ayo – “Bad Guy”

In this new entry in our ‘Diamonds In The Rough’ category, we want to introduce you to upcoming artist YXL Ayo and his brand new single titled “Bad Guy”.

YXL Ayo is back in a big way, taking his artistry to new heights with the cinematic visuals for his infectious new afroswing single “Bad Guy” (prod. Super Beats). Coming just months after the release of his acclaimed Quayside Drive EP, the melodious offering marks the latest chapter in what has been a prolific year for the Skegness star in themaking.

Directed by Will Ainsworth, renowned for his work with the likes of Big Zuu, Capo Lee and Jaz Karis, the compelling “Bad Guy” video follows the plot of a love-crazed man spurred on to commit crimes to maintain a bad boy persona for his spouse. Playing out in reverse, starting with the story’s grisly conclusion, the bite-sized drama is enthralling from the jump. Taking inspiration from Bonnie and Clyde, Ayo explains that the visuals serve as a cautionary tale of “how one’s need for love can cause them to change how they are, which inevitably leads to them doing things which are out of character to impress their lover.”

Drawing on myriad influences ranging from R&B to alt hip hop, the versatile Nigerian nativecurrently helms the genre-bending collective Young and Living (YXL), lending both slickvocals and innovative production abilities to the group. With support from BBC Radio and Reprezent DJs already under his belt, expect to start hearing the name a lot more often!
