EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Ty Dolla $ign

Ty Dolla $ign exclusive interview 2021

In cooperation with Smirnoff, we were able to do an exclusive interview with Ty Dolla $ign. We spoke about his new joint album with dvsn; Cheers To The Best Memories, making music during COVID-19, his upcoming music label and much more.

Recently, you teamed up with the brand Smirnoff. How did that partnership come together?

I’ve been a lifelong fan of Smirnoff, so I’m truly excited to be not only a Smirnoff partner, but officially apart of the Smirnoff family. It was only right to come together.

The latest product that came forth from your partnership with Smirnoff is Smirnoff Pink Lemonade. What’s your favorite thing about this drink?

The Pink Lemonade vodka, ice and seltzer are all fire and taste great! I love that the seltzer is only 98 calories!

Can we expect some more things in the future from your partnership with Smirnoff?

I love being apart of the Smirnoff family! We hope that there’s always more to look forward to between us!

2020 and 2021 are years which have been dominated by COVID-19. Is writing and recording music during a pandemic something else?

Working on music through the pandemic has been different then before — I wasn’t able to get in the studio with people, so collaborating would often come to just sending ideas back and forth and speaking over Facetime to bring ideas together.

Recently, you released a collaborative project with dvsn. It received many positive reviews because of the old school R&B vibes on it. How did this project come together?

dvsn and I started this tape a few years back on the tour bus. We knew then we wanted to do a joint project and we’re glad to finally share it with you all!

We are based in the Netherlands and many of your Dutch fans heard your music for the first time on television in 2011 during the series/documentary ‘Holland In Da Hood’; a series about young, Dutch rappers who were dreaming about a big rap career and traveled to L.A. to try to make their dream come through. In one of the episodes, they were allowed to record music with you in your studio. What do you remember about that series?

Damn 2011! That was probably one of my first times overseas. I don’t usually let people in the studio while I’m creating, but I just remember the Netherlands and the crew showing so much love so and I had to make an exception one time. Shout out to my Dutch fans!

Before you signed with Atlantic Records, you released your music via your own label Pu$haz Ink. What’s the current status of that label and do you have some dope upcoming artists whose music will be released via Pu$haz Ink in the future?

Since then, Mustard started 10 Summers Records, YG started his label 4HUNNID and I started THMVMNT Records (The Movement). THMVMNT Records hasn’t been fully announced but it’s coming soon and I definitely have a few artist that I can’t wait to share with you all!

We love to ask the following questions to all artists we interview: which artist or person was your biggest inspiration to start making music and with which artists you would love to work in the future?

Everything I listen to is super inspiring. I can’t really pick a favorite because everyone one of them has something that I love. In the future, I’d like to work with BTS, Baby Keem, Meshell Ndegeocello… There’s so many to name.

Personally, we love the chemistry you have with 24hrs. A few years ago, you both hinted at a collaborative project called 24 Dollars. Is that still in the making or can we expect some other collabs from you both?

24hrs is my brother and one of my favorite artist, I love him! You can definitely expect more collabs form us in the future!

What can we expect from you in the rest of 2021?

2021 has been the year of unexpected surprises! I can’t wait to share with you what’s to come!
