EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Vedo

Vedo interview fresh hip-hop R&B

Recently, we had the chance to speak to Vedo about his successful musical year. We talked about his For You album that dropped this year, COVID-19, his first gold-certified single, his The Voice experience and much more.

2020 was a really productive year for you with the release of a project, several singles and many remixes. What inspires you to come up with and put out so much quality music?

Everyday life inspires me; my family, my friends, my hardships etc… In addition, the state of R&B was in need of some real R&B, so I decided to for just that, take my time and release quality music!

2020 is also the year of COVID-19. Is writing and recording music during a pandemic something else?

In a way it was and wasn’t. It was kind of a challenge to come up with interesting topics because, like I said before, I get my inspiration from everyday life, meeting new people, the conversations etc… On the upside, the pandemic has been able to help me re-focus and get a lot done.

Your most recent project is For You. The sound of this project is really unique and has some throwback elements to the early 00’s R&B sound, which we absolutely love. What or who inspired you during the creation of the album?

It’s funny because I found myself listening to early 00’s R&B while making this album! I just felt like today’s R&B needed to be merged together and that’s what I did.

The single “You Got It” has recently been certified gold and has landed on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. That must be a dream come true. How does it feel to have your first gold certified single?

I really can’t explain the feeling, it’s such a surreal moment. It’s hard enough to go gold as a majorly signed artist, but as an independent R&B artist it’s 100 times harder. I can’t lie, I feel great, I feel blessed, and accomplished but I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface.

Recently, you released a remix of “You Got It” featuring Ty Dolla $ign. How did this collaboration happen?

This collab was a surprise to me from my team, I didn’t know that Ty Dolla $ign had an interest in getting on the remix, so when I found out I was super excited.

What some people may not know is that you have been discovered on The Voice. Was it your own idea to sign up for this show or did other persuade you to do it?

No, it was actually my manager’s idea to do it. I actually had no intention of doing a competition show but my manager said it would be a good look for me and it was.

During The Voice, you were mentored by Usher. That must be amazing for an upcoming R&B singer. How is Usher in person and what is the most important thing you have learned from him?

Usher is probably the coolest and most humble person you’d ever meet, he’s very insightful and very knowledgeable. Literally, he’s willing to share all the information he knows about the music business, and on what it takes to make it and remain successful.

On your YouTube channel, you frequently put out some great remixes of recent and older R&B hits by other artists. How do you get inspired to remix a song?

Well, the song has to be a hit either a current hit or past hit. And then I listen to the song until I know the song word for word and then I approach it with my own style.

We love to ask the following questions to all artists we interview: which artist or person was your biggest inspiration to start making music and with which artists you would love the work in the future?

The Temptations, Usher and Chris Brown. I’d love to work with any artist that’s willing to work with me.

What can we expect from you in 2021?

More hits! We just went gold with “You Got It”, so we are so excited for the new year and what’s to come. More music, more placements, more Vedo… I’m looking to get into acting and all of that. Investments etc… I’m looking to not just be an artist but a brand and business man.
